Annapolis, MD is a town rich in history for the state of Maryland and the United States. Since 1649, when the city was settled by Puritans who moved from Virginia, it has remained a hub of activity and government. While the water-bordered town has plenty of gorgeous weather in the summer, it can have frigid and snow-packed winters. If you are an Annapolis, MD homeowner tired of facing high heating bills, Husky Heating Oil can help.

Annapolis was initially called Providence and Anne Arundel Town before being named Annapolis after Princess Anne. When she became Queen Anne in 1708, she chartered the city. Today, her royal badge can be seen on the Annapolis flag. The city planner, Sir Francis, took hints from European towns. Instead of using a grid to lay out the streets, he utilized circles with streets radiating out from them to highlight notable places in the city. The State House and St. Anne’s Episcopal Church both sit at the center of two circles.

The city grew a great deal during the peak of the shipping industry. The wealthy farmers and merchants in Annapolis created elaborate mansions and added numerous amenities in the town to replicate things from their home in England. Many of the historic houses in Annapolis rival those of the wealthy families in English. Today, Annapolis is home to more 18th-century structures than any other place in the United States.

In the early 1700s, Annapolis set the tone for the cultural, economic and political climates throughout the Colonies. The Maryland State House was constructed in 1772 and was the home to numerous historical events, including General George Washington stepping down from the Continental Army in 1783. The United States Congress also ratified the Treaty of Paris in the State House. The Maryland State House is the only state house to have served as the nation’s capitol!

Over time, Annapolis has grown into the remarkable city that it is today. It is the county seat of Anne Arundel County and boasts a population of almost 40,000 residents.
