Dayton, MD is a charming community in Howard County just south of Baltimore and north of Washington, D.C. While today’s residents love Dayton for all of its modern amenities, it has a rich history and deep roots in Maryland.
The town was named Dayton after the post office was established in 1864. As the population increased, the town expanded to include a wheelwright shop and three general stores. One of the most notable stores in the town was Maloney’s General Store, which was built just after the Civil War and passed down through the generations.
Another notable historic building in Dayton, MD was a one-room schoolhouse on Green Bridge Road. When the school was destroyed in a fire, a two-room school was created at the crossroads of Ten Oaks and Howard roads. The two-room school is still standing today, along with many other old buildings. Some of the most popular local landmarks include the Crossroads Pub, Hobbs Service Station and the post office. The Crossroads pub has been around for decades, and it is well known for delicious steamed crabs and crab cakes. Many of the recipes used in the 1990s are still being used over 20 years later today.
Every year, Dayton celebrates the annual Dayton Days Parade to celebrate Lenny Hobbs. The Hobbs family has been influential in Dayton for generations, as they owned The Hobbs Family Store and were very active members of the community.
