One of the most notable landmarks in Harmans is the marker placed on Dorsey Road to commemorate the church once located there. In the mid-19th century, Harmans was home to an African American church and community. In the early 1900s, the Benevolent Sons and Daughters of Abraham, which was a mutual aid society, purchased and donated the land surrounding the marker. The society erected a two-room school on the property based around the Rosenwald Program outline for rural schools. The school served local children until 1955.
The Rosenwald Schools are located throughout the country, including numerous locations in Alabama, Maryland, South Carolina and Texas. Julius Rosenwald, the president of Sears Roebuck, pioneered the Rosenwald Schools through his foundation. The schools were specifically constructed to educate African American students in primarily African American communities in the South. Over the course of 1912-1932, over 100 Rosenwald Schools were constructed. Other Maryland schools are located in Glen Burnie, Pasadena, Pumphrey, Rockville, Chapel Hill, Silver Spring, College Park, District Heights, Landover, Lanham, Rossville and San Domingo.
