Lothian, MD is a town of approximately 6,800 residents located near plenty of interesting historical sites. It is also home to a handful of places listed on the National Register of Historic Places. St. James’ Parish is one of those places. It was established in 1692 when the Maryland General Assembly enacted the Act of Establishment. This Act divided up Maryland into 30 different formal parishes. In 1698, this historic church was the first parochial lending library of the Church of England for American parishes. The church was added to the register in 1972.

Another interesting historic site in Lothian, MD is Burrages End. This historic home was constructed in the late 18th century and replaced an earlier building on the same property. It was owned by Colonel John Weems, who was the contractor who built the St. James’ Church. The home was then purchased by Thomas Sellman and owned by his family until 1946. A small family cemetery used by both cemeteries still sits on the site. The property has outbuildings including a tobacco barn and slave quarters. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
