Tevis Energy: Husky Heating Oil
Odenton, MD is one of the most notable cities in Maryland thanks to its convenient location near the state capital and its close proximity to Fort George G. Meade. Today, Odenton has a population of almost 40,000 residents who enjoy the small town feel with all of the bigger city amenities.
Odenton was first settled around an outpost of the Annapolis and Elk Ridge Railroad (A&ER). At the start of the Civil War, Union soldiers were tasked with guarding the Odenton stop on the A&ER because it was the only railroad connection between the nation’s capital and the rest of the North. All mail, soldiers and supplies had to go through Annapolis to Washington, D.C.
Odenton, MD was officially established in 1868 when the Baltimore Potomac Railroad (B&P) was first opened. The train station and attached telegraph office were named Odenton after Oden Bowie, who was the president of the B&P Railroad and a former state governor. The railroad junction became even more popular with the addition of another railroad, and a commercial center was established. General stores served local residents and railroad workers, a post office handled all of the mail and numerous small taverns began to flourish. Houses were constructed for railroad workers and a school began to serve local students.
The area surrounding Odenton, MD also started to grow around it, and numerous canneries were constructed along with tobacco, wheat and corn farms. Odenton, MD began to grow more dramatically after the start of World War I when Fort Meade was established. The US Department of War purchased a whopping 19,000 acres of land for their training camp. As a result, Odenton transitioned from a hub of farmland to the center of military and armed forces.
If you are an Odenton, MD homeowner searching for a more affordable and reliable way to heat your house during the ice, snow and winter weather-filled Maryland winters, Husky Heating Oil can help.
