Churchton, MD is a lovely community in Anne Arundel County with a well-developed history. The town initially gained its name because residents flocked to the location during colonial times to attend church. In Churchton, a traveling preacher would stop by once a month to perform baptisms and marriages, conduct services and do other pastoral duties. Once it had enough people to support a post office it was named Churchtown and eventually Churchton.
One of the most notable sites in Churchton, MD is Franklin Manor. Franklin Manor was originally part of a land grant given to the Franklin family. Back then, the property was primarily used to grow crops. British Navy ships would drop anchor in the Bay and come on shore to purchase vegetables, fruits and meat from the owners of the farm. Eventually the farm was passed to the Springer family and then the Franklin Manor Beach Community.
When the property was purchased in 1922, the plans were to make the property a gorgeous summer resort community. Some of the oldest structures still standing on the property today date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Over time, the Franklin Manor community in Churchton has grown to include over 600 houses and plenty of charm. Thanks to its location in the Chesapeake Bay, it is loved by Washington, D.C. commuters and those who love the sea alike. Franklin Manor includes family-friendly amenities including a park, playground, picnic area and more.
