Laurel, MD is one of the most interesting suburbs in the greater Baltimore and Washington, D.C. area. It was formed on the land along the fall line of the Patuxent River that was owned by the Snowden family in the 1650s as part of a massive plantation that also included Montpelier. Over time, Laurel evolved from a small milling town to the bustling community that it is today.

Nicholas Snowden built the first grist mill in Laurel in the early 1800s, and it eventually expanded to be a cotton mill. The Avondale Mill was also added to the town in 1844, and buildings were constructed around the mill to house the workers. Due to its popularity for mill workers, Laurel, MD was initially known as “Laurel Factory,” and that is the name found on the first post office paperwork. It was largely a company town that had a school and shops designed to meet the needs of workers.

In the latter portion of the 19th century, Laurel began to shift from a factory town to a suburban town. People relied on the railroad to commute to Baltimore or Washington, D.C. for their jobs. The town received boarded sidewalks, paved streets and an electric power plant in the 1890s, and it swelled to over 2,000 residents.

Over the course of the 20th century, Laurel continued to grow. Laurel Park Racecourse opened and is still a notable horse racing venue to this day. The next boom in Laurel’s population occurred with the addition of Fort Meade and NSA to the area. Today, Laurel has over 25,000 residents who enjoy the location and the rich history of the area.
