One of the most charming cities in Howard County is Clarksville, MD. Clarksville has humble origins, and it has evolved into a destination for families that love the convenient location, nice weather and Howard County schools.

In the late 1600s, Thomas Browne, a Patuxent Ranger, mapped out the area from the Patuxent River to the Snowden Plantation. The area now known as Clarksville was filled with tobacco plantations including Hobbs Regulation and Folly Quarter. In the mid-1800s, Dr. William Watkins suggested the creation of the Howard District in Anne Arundel County. Over time, the district grew enough to be called Howard County.

Clarksville, MD is named after the John R. Clark family. The Clark family came from Ireland to Anne Arundel County in the late 1700s. The land that the family purchased included one of the only African American-owned and operated blacksmith shops, Jack Howard’s Blacksmith Shop. When the first post office opened in 1851, it was called Clarksville. In the 1930s, the town’s population was only 65. The most common industries in Clarksville included limestone mining and agriculture. The town was well known for having dozens of apple orchards.

In 1869, Clarksville was chosen as the end of the 10-mile turnpike that was built on Sandy Spring Road. This private toll road was a notable departure from county-maintained roads that turned into Route 108. The legacy of the Clark family who leant the town their name is still alive today, as their seventh-generation family farm is still producing fresh vegetables and meat.
